It’s Witchcraft

Did you see the Sarah Palin witchcraft video?

Of course you did.

But did you see her short commentary on the whole thing just two months ago?

Apparently, before going into her whole “red-headed Sasquatch for Jesus” bit, which I posted on a couple of weeks ago, she commented on Pastor Munthee’s blessing (if that’s the right word for it).

In an earlier excerpt from that video (shown in this Keith Olbermann clip) she seems amused by this witch hunter’s prayer for her success in politics. In her words: “He’s so bold he’s praying…Lord, make a way. Lord, make a way. And I’m thinking this guy is really bold. He doesn’t know what I’m going to do. He doesn’t know what my plans are…”

Yeah, neither do we.

Maybe it is witchcraft.

I thought that it’s worth pointing out the gendered nature of modern witch-hunting in eastern and southern Africa. Despite traditional healers being both men and women it is almost exclusively older women (widowed and childless generally) who are targeted in this manner. In South Africa there are villages composed entirely of women who have been chased out of their homes by people like Sarah Palin’s pastor Muthee.

Yes, thanks, glesker22, for pointing this out. The gendered violence associated with the Palin’s Pastor Munthee and witch hunting in general is shocking. When I first saw the video I feared that this sort of fundamentalism would dovetail with Republican fundamentalists quite nicely.

I think this is just one example of how Sarah Palin’s superficial pretty-based politics allows and encourages practices that are bad for women – feminist or not.

    Thanks again for the post.
