The Ghost of Kwame Kilpatrick

Forget swiftboating.

A new Willie Horton-like campaign ad from the “Freedoms Defense Fund” draws on the  “dangerous Black male” frame by showing the mugshot of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, along with a rolling account of his charges, as Obama’s voice plays in the background.

See the video and critique at racismreview.com.

This is quite horrifying. Googling around for reactions I notice a lot of conservative blogs responding by saying how the ad proves that all of Obama’s friends are all ‘gangsters’. Clearly the critique at racismreview is right: the goal is to make Obama seem like one of those ‘other’ black men–the non-exceptional kind.
